How do dark fiber, wavelength service, and Carrier Ethernet differ?
Dark fiber is an unlit physical fiber strand, a wavelength service is provider-operated Layer 1 optical capacity, and Carrier Ethernet is a managed Layer 2 connectivity service.
They can use the same route but transfer very different responsibilities. With dark fiber, the customer generally supplies and operates the optical equipment. With a wavelength, the provider operates the optical transport system. With Carrier Ethernet, the provider delivers defined Ethernet service behavior between service endpoints regardless of the underlying transport.

Practical guidance
Compare the demarcation, route and facility diversity, bandwidth and upgrade path, customer equipment, optics, protection, latency, MTU, OAM, monitoring, restoration target, maintenance responsibility, term, and construction exposure. The service name alone is not enough.
Limits and verification boundary
Providers use product names inconsistently. Some wavelength offers include protection or managed client equipment and some dark-fiber agreements include maintenance, colocation, or regeneration facilities, so verify the exact demarcation and responsibility matrix in the quote and contract.
