What is an OLT, and how does it relate to an ONU, ONT, and ODN?

An optical line termination (OLT), often called an optical line terminal, is the provider-side endpoint of a passive optical network.

It sits at the common root of the optical distribution network, implements the PON protocol, connects toward the provider network, sends downstream traffic, receives time-shared upstream bursts, and coordinates many subscriber-side ONUs or ONTs.
